PALHIP - Sub-Projects
This page will describe each of the sub-projects subsumed under PALHIP, presenting much of the primary data collected in the course of these initiatives. The migration of the sub-project data onto this page may begin as early as academic year 2017-2018.
The sub-projects initiated to date include the following:
Sub-Project 1: The study of the artifacts recovered at the Villa Regina a Boscoreale, a mid-level farmhouse located 1.2 km to the NW of Pompeii that was excavated in its entirety by the Soprintendenza during the period 1979-1983 (undertaken during the 2012 and a large portion of the 2013 study seasons; data collection completed).
Sub-Project 2: The study of the artifacts from selected contexts at the Insula dei Casti Amanti, a block in Regio 9 of Pompeii that was subject to extensive excavation by the Soprintendenza during the period 1989-20012 (preliminary work undertaken during the final part of the 2013 study season; more extensive work to be undertaken in the future).
Sub-Project 3: The study of the artifacts from the Tower 8/Nola Gate area, a cluster of trash middens deposited against the outer face of Pompeii's fortification wall that was excavated by a team from the Universitá Statele di Milano in 1978 (work undertaken during the 2014, 2015, and the final part of the 2016 study seasons; data collection completed).
Sub-Project 4: The study of the dolia from Region 1, Insula 22, a set of nine large storage containers exposed in excavations undertaken in a block in Regio 1 of Pompeii by the Soprintendenza during the 1980s (work undertaken during the 2014 and 2015 study seasons; data collection completed).
Sub-Project 5: The compositional analysis of pottery with manufacturing defects from the Tower 8/Nola Gate midden excavations (work undertaken collaboratively with the archaeometric research group at the Universitá di Napoli Federico Secondo directed by Vincenzo Morra beginnning during the 2015 study season; ongoing).
Sub-Project 6: The study of a selection off the amphoras from Oplontis Villa B, a wine bottling/warehouse facility located ca. 1.5 km west of Pompeii that was excavated in its entirety by the Soprintendenza during the period 1978-1983 (work initiated during the 201t6 study season, ongoing).
